Charles L. Boles, DVM, DACVS

Dr. Charlie Boles was born and raised in a small town in Northern California. He attended Chico State University before transferring to UC Davis, where he graduated from Veterinary School in 1971. After an internship, residency and 2 years on the faculty at New Bolton Center, University of Pennsylvania he moved on to Michigan State University as an Assistant Professor in Equine Medicine and Surgery. He left in 1979 after 3 hard winters to return to his native California, taking with him a wife, Dr. Joni Samuels, a small animal veterinarian. After passing his surgery boards and authoring more than 25 scientific articles, he was determined to leave academia for private practice in California, and has been in the Santa Ynez Valley ever since. After working with his classmate Dr. Doug Herthel for several years, he elected to start his own practice, Specifically Equine Veterinary Service.  Over the years he has been fortunate to work with many types of horses in many aspects of veterinary medicine, but his true love is the medicine and surgery of the performance horse. He has mentored close to 70 interns and residents over the years and still loves sharing his knowledge with his clients. In his spare time, he, his wife and two adult sons enjoy travel, fishing, gardening and “four wheeling” along the Santa Ynez River that runs through his backyard.
